Jean-Louis Harouel, House fronts and Law in Paris under the Ancient Regime
In what measure is law a creator of urban forms. Taking Paris under the Ancient Regime as an example, we see that there it was not only the result of conscious and volontarist processes that claimed their aesthetic ambitions, but also the incidental consequence of regulations whose motivations are unrelated to aesthetic, which nevertheless left important marks on the urban landscape. And, in the present case, it created a visual urban space of great value.
