Florence Burgat, Being Someone Else's Property
Presenting on one side the legal status of the slave (in Graeco-Roman Antiquity and in the French Code Noir) and on the other that of the domestic animal (in French law) allows to unearth stunning similarities, even in the way the prerogatives of the owner on these very peculiar goods slaves and animals are have been reduced by the corresponding legislation. This short paper also adds to a reflection on the philosophical status of the appropriated beings who are "someone else's property" and on servitude.

Key Words : slave, animal, ownership
