Georges Durry, Umpiring on sporting grounds
The author, after stressing the need to resort to umpires for any sporting event, first draws a clear-cut distinction between the sports judge, who grades competitors and the sports umpire, who plays no other role than enforcing the rules of the sport in question. He then shows that beyond the wide range of arbitrations mode, one always comes across the same characteristic: the umpire has to decide on the spot. Henceforth the risk of a multiplication of refereeing errors which are easier to avoid today by turning to ever more sophisticated techniques but difficult to amend once committed.
