Denis Forest, Mind Uploading: More than a Thought Experiment?
Among all the scenarios suggested by transhumanists that involve the survival of persons beyond their biological existence, Mind uploading may be considered as the least implausible. In this paper, I establish a filiation between the philosophical tradition of though experiments derived from Locke’s reflection on personal Identity and the perspective of Mind uploading. This filiation is especially important when we discuss what could be criteria of success in such a context and what is required by a genuine mind transfer. The vindication of mind uploading offered by Kenneth Hayworth is analyzed in its relation to its scientific credentials. I give reasons to doubt that Hayworth’s optimism is justified by current scientific research in fields like connectomics and brain simulation.
