Eric Buge, In Search Of Micromégas’ Diamond. A Few Thoughts About The French Grand Débat National And Convention Citoyenne Pour Le Climat
This contribution analyzes the French Grand débat national (2019) and Convention citoyenne pour le climat (2019-2020) in light of the opposition developed by political theory between participatory and deliberative democracy. They both demonstrate the difficulty of articulating participation and deliberation. Beyond this opposition, these two processes share the fundamental characteristic of being merely consultative. Their inclusion in political institutions will alone allow the deliberative and participatory forms of inclusion of citizens in public decision making to be fully democratic.
