Paper's abstract

François Chenet, Globalization from an Indian point of view
Globalization embodies integration of international markets for goods, services, technology, finance and, to some extent, labor. Since 1991, India has accepted globalization as part of its economic development. In this paper, an attempt is made to examine its impact on Indian economy, with critical implications on growth, equity and poverty. The phenomenon of globalization has become an all too common scapegoat for the unwelcome consequences of the upheavals assailing Indian society and culture. It is argued that in spite of the rise of Hindu nationalism and some outbursts of communalist violence, India has many assets to tackle its identity-centered problems and to get out of globalization without loss.
