Léon Vandermeersch, China and Globalization : Responsive Foreign Policies and Cultural Distinctiveness
Among all countries on the planet, China is the greatest beneficiary of Globalization. This not only led to its accession to WTO, but also entailed the far-reaching transformation of is relationships with the outside world. Peking has moved remarkably closer to Moscow and Washington, while distancing itself from the nuclear adventurism of Pyongyang. The differences between China and India are in process of being settled. Semi-official Chinese voices can be heard today opposing the anti-Japanese sentiments that prevailed since World War II. Despite (unfounded) fears of Chinese industrial competition, a vast free trade zone may soon be put in place linking China with the ASEAN group, Japan and South Korea, where economic co-operation would benefit from the Chinese style of corporate governance characterized by « relationism » (guanxi zhuyi, a system of personalized socio-economic relationships).
